Mr. Cranky @ Large

This week we'll manipulate the data from the Great-Big Summary Chart to achieve some pointless results.

The Big Losers

"We won a Tony!"

Ah, shaddup! How many did you lose?

To level the field we can subtract the number of wins from the total nominations in order to reflect only the awards lost. This reveals the big losers. Here they are in order of losses.

Ranking Show No. of losses
54. Sweet Smell of Success, Thoroughly Modern Millie 20
53. Into the Woods 19
51. (2-way tie) Morning's at Seven, Oklahoma! 18
50. The Crucible 13
49. Mamma Mia! 11
48. Urinetown 10
47. Private Lives 8
45. (2-way tie) tick, tick... BOOM!, Topdog/Underdog 7
44. The Last 5 Years 6
41. (3-way tie) 36 Views, The Elephant Man, Noises Off 5
36. (5-way tie) Dance of Death, The Goat or Who Is Sylvia?, Major Barbara, The Spitfire Grill, Thou Shalt Not 4
31. (5-way tie) Fortune's Fool, Franny's Way, Franz Kafka's The Castle, Metamorphoses, The Shape of Things 3
21. (10-way tie) Cymbeline (Theater for a New Audience), Elaine Stritch: At Liberty, The Glory of Living, Hedda Gabler, The Man Who Had All the Luck, Nocturne, Reefer Madness, The Seagull, The Women, Wonder of the World 2
1. (20-way tie) Cressida Among the Greeks, The Dazzle, Dragapella, Everett Beekin, Four, The Golem, Homebody/Kabul, Kilt, The Matchmaker, Monster, The Phantom Lady, Psych, QED, Streets of New York, Summer of '42, Swimming with Watermelons, Thief River, To You, The Birdie!, The Voice of the Turtle, World of Mirth 1

Note that if we take this completely at face value, the smallest number of losses, wins! Of course, tickets for most of these "big winners" are mighty scarce (and not because they're sold out).

All Stars

Of course, that makes little sense, does it? Much more sensical, although equally pointless, is to look at the win-to-loss percentage ratio. If we divide the number of awards won by the total nominations for each winner, we come up with something like baseball batting averages. So here then, is the list of winners. (Shows with no hits have been dropped from the chart.)

Bear in mind that despite their relatively respectable performance at the plate, many of these players have been sent to farm teams, dropped to the minors, and/or retired to the old ballplayers home. And regardless of their poor performances at the plate, a number of these "hitless" wonders continue to play in the majors.

Our congratulations are extended to all the players. Win or lose, remember it's only a game!
