Another Op'ning - The Immigrant, Part 4

Ah, me. Where has the time gone?

I've been more than extremely remiss in maintaining the journal. I really hadn't anticipated the various demands on my time. Nonetheless, to bring you somewhat up to date:

We opened. The opening night sell-out forced the authors and other creative staff into the lobby for the show. The performance went flawlessly and audience response was everything we could have wished for. The laughs fell in the right places and as far as the tears go, well, let's just say I could have done very well for myself had I opened a Kleenex concession.

Watching the show, or should I say listening to it, from the lobby gave an interesting perspective, and one that I tried on and off throughout the run -- sometimes by choice, others because I had come to a performance for which there were no available seats. Although it is certainly most important to the sense of the show that the writers get the full perspective of lights, costumes, visuals, sound, and other performance elements, the occasions where the visual were eliminated allowed for a different kind of focus. One that I found valuable in continuing to work on the piece.

The opening night party was held, of all places, at the Russian Tea Room, in the third floor Bear Ballroom, if I'm not mistaken. Don't hold me to the third floor, though; the latter part of the evening was a bit bewildering, from the stretch limo ride with Milton Harelik, the author's father (for those who know the show, he's the third of the children born), to the endless interviews with press, to the press of well-wishers and potential investors. Everyone was uniquely positive and the cast was glowing (although some might attribute that to the cocktails and the upcoming first day off in eight days). The entire evening left us all on a high and wondering what would be next.

What came next was, of course, the anxious anticipation of the reviews. We'll get to that next time.
