Still Going to School: A follow-up

As a kind of follow-up to last week's article on how to find a theatre training program on the net, here's a short list of some of the schools I've come across. Their inclusion here is not intended as an endorsement of their programs by any means; the schools were chosen because:

Some of the best known and finest schools have some of the dorkiest websites, while some schools I had only heard rumors of had some of the best sites.

Remember: an excellent web site doesn't necessarily make for an excellent training program (although it doesn't preclude the possibility). Nor does its location in Australia.

A partial, incomplete, and totally arbitrary
List of college and university websites

(alphabetizing [don't try to figure it out] and annoying colors, free of charge!)

  • Arizona State University Department of Theatre
  • American Academy of Dramatic Arts
  • Brigham Young University Theatre and Film Department
and the College of Fine Arts and Communications
  • University of California, Irvine
  • University of California, San Diego
  • Carnegie Mellon University Department of Drama
(the oldest degree-granting drama program in the United States)
  • University of Evansville Department of Theatre
  • Harvard University Institute for Advanced Theatre Training
  • Indiana University Department of Theatre and Drama
  • University of Haifa Theatre Department
  • London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art
  • Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" - Leipzig
auf Englisch College of Music and Drama Leipzig
  • State University of New York at Purchase, Division of Theatre Arts and Film
  • The School of Performing Arts (Ottawa)
  • Princeton University
The theatre department also maintains a theatre resources page
  • Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
  • Rutgers University
  • University of Southern California
  • University of Utah, Department of Theatre
  • Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts
  • University of Wollongong Faculty of Creative Arts
  • Yale University School of Drama

  • Even if you attend a completely different school than those listed (perhaps even one outside of Australia), attending a college is often credited with doing some major boosting to an actor's career -- sometimes less for the training he/she gets, but more for the networking that goes on during and afterwords. If not for connections that were made during the academic years, it's quite conceivable that a large number of our most successful actors would still be unknown.

But even if they were unknown, they'd probably agree with me when I tell you to:
    Go see a show!
