Darrin Baker grew up in Toronto, Ontario where his career began as a teenager doing radio and tv commercials and local theatre. He soon expanded into guest starring on television series such as My Secret Identity and creating the voices of leading characters on several childrenís animated series, including Jayce on Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors. Then at 22, Darrin was cast in the original Canadian company of Les Miserables and spent one year in the role of Babet and understudy to Marius. Darrin then moved to Los Angeles where he continued his television career with guest roles on such series as Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Crime & Punishment as well as expanding his theatrical life with such roles as Che in Evita and Riff in West Side Story. He also took his first foray into directing, taking on the Los Angeles premiere of the 6 person musical Personals for the Actors Alley Theatre. This production won 10 Dramalogue awards including one for Best Director. Returning to his acting life, Darrin was cast in the original Los Angeles company of Sunset Blvd. with Glenn Close. After a successful run at the Shubert Theatre, Darrin decided to make the move with the show to New York, and in month year, made his Broadway debut in Sunset Blvd. When the show closed 2 1/2 years later, his next project was to travel to the renowned Actors Theatre of Louisville to play the comic lead in the Cole Porter revue Hot 'n' Cole. It was there he met his wife-to-be, co-star Mylinda Hull. After his return to New York, Darrin returned to Broadway as Lord Neville in The Scarlet Pimpernel. He made his off-Broadway debut in January 1999 starring opposite Liz Larsen and Christiane Noll in the three-person musical Little by Little at the York Theatre. Shortly thereafter, the trio recorded the original cast album for Varese Sarabande. Then it was back to Broadway to join the cast of the hit musical Footloose. In May of 99 Darrin got the idea for a CD, singing duets with some of the fantastic leading ladies with whom he has worked during his time in New York. After meeting with producers James Marino and Caralyn Spector, the project, "What's a Nice Girl Like You...?" was underway and on July 5th the majority of all ten tracks were recorded at BackPocket studios. Over the summer, while the CD was in post-production, Darrin returned to directing and re-mounted Personals for an East Coast production at the Cazenovia Theatre Company in upstate New York. Then in October of this year, Darrin and Mylinda were married and shortly thereafter they both started rehearsals at Theatre Virginia for the world premiere of Scandals, a new burlesque show written by Ralph Allen, creator of Sugar Babies, directed and choreographed by Danny Daniels, and destined for a New York production in 2000-01. |
