Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at midnight (Broadway Time)
London was gray and rainy, the flu seems to be ravaging the West End (leads were out at 'Witches of Eastwick', 'The Beautiful Game' and 'The Secret Garden', among others). After my long-distance trek to be back in time for the 'Blast!' opening, I'm off to get some much needed sleep.
Now, who was it that said that Glenn Carter would never appear in a Broadway theatre again? Not true! James and I saw him at THE Broadway Theatre tonight - at the opening of 'Blast!' Is that close enough?
I love 'Blast!' - I really do. I think it's super, and I think everyone, except the New York Times, of course, would enjoy it. But since most of you are not Bruce Weber, go out and get tickets now. It's by far the most energetic thing I've seen onstage in a while, and no, I am not in the least bit blinded by the attractive snare drummer when I say that. Really.
The play is at its best when it is telling its central story: a good man doomed by his own hand, the tormenting experience of his final days and its emotional repercussions among those around him.
Missed this one the other day, inspiring story : )
From Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live............Jimmy Fallon's Review of The Producers
"The Producers it stars Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. You know, I couldn't get tickets to this play, it's like sold out for like two years. But here's what I think it's about. Ferris Bueller comes out, er Matthew Broderick comes out, and he's like, I can't believe it, I'm gonna produce a play, Springtime for Hitler, what's the point, it could be about Hitler, it could be about Stalin, it still wouldn't change the fact that I don't have a car! chickachicka, oh yeah! And Nathan Lane comes out, he's like, we're gonna produce, I'm a producer, Hakuna Matata, for the rest of your life, Hakuna Matata, means no passing phrase, Hakuna Matata! Break a leg guys, see ya at the Tonys!"
As befit a movie directed by one of the most manic writers in show business, "The Producers" piled shtick upon shtick.
I had an idea. Maybe we can combine a few shows to make one show profitable. How about The Jane Seuss Horror Class in Nuremberg? I still don't think it would fill the Gershwin...
THE Hollywood legend Ann Miller calls her "that hateful woman" who "gave me one of the biggest heartbreaks I've ever had in show business."
LOCAL 802 - which represents Broadway musicians - is threatening to unionize the cast of "Blast!" - setting the stage for a possible showdown between the union, one of the most powerful in the theater, and the…
Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Mel Brooks and company on The Producers, the most wildly anticipated new musical of the season.
