The Reviews Are In(sulting)

Did you catch the column I wrote a couple of weeks ago about Broadway Bound? It's William Torbert Leonard's 618-page tome that's subtitled A Guide to Shows That Died Aborning. He detailed over a hundred plays and musicals that closed out of town during their tryouts, even though they'd already booked a New York theater and expected to come in. Because Leonard described the plot of each production, I replicated his opening lines for two dozen synopses to suggest that the shows never looked promising. More than one reader wrote in to say that they regretted that the book didn't also include excerpts from the reviews these disasters earned. Now it's my turn to say, "Ah, but Leonard did include a few of these." Want to see a few?
