I LOVE Marcus Lovett. LOVE. Did I mention that I saw him in 'Aspects of Love' and that he was the only redeeming thing in 'Whistle Down the Wind' when I first saw it? LOVE. Must get ticket to 'Urinetown'!

There was no point to this update, but I wanted to share my joy with all of you.

We here at BroadwayStars would have enjoyed 'Stars in the Alley' a bit more if...:
- It was about 20 degrees warmer
- Other members of the press would not push and shove and walk in front of those with cameras
- Our camera had not decided to fail at the very moment that Patrick Wilson forgot all of the lines to his song

But other than that, it was an enjoyable experience. I wasn't there last year, so I don't know if they had blocked off the center section for the corporate sponsors then, too, but this year there was a block of 50 folding chairs set aside for the folks from Continental, Lucent etc, and the audience was pushed off to the side. Now I know that corporate money makes a lot of things easier, but it's the fans who're buying the tickets to the shows.

Did you hear that huge sigh of relief yesterday? That was Playbill Online and Broadway.com as they looked at the new Broadwayonline.com (nee: Theatre.com). How unfortunate of a redesign, to wait so long for that. I know I should talk, but hell, my site is a non-profit without the 501-C-3.

One may ask why the name change as well. Theatre.com pretty much said it all. Unfortunately Theater.com said Broadway.com. The "er" domain is owned by Hollywood Media which owns Broadway.com and theatre fans (mostly from New Mexico) were typing Theater.com into their browser and ending up at Broadway.com. This lack of securing the accidental domain was taking some of the traffic away from the "re" site. And on the web, traffic equates to money.

Anyway, with all that said, it must be said that Broadwayonline.com has planned the most comprehensive theatre fan site. Planned is the key word in that sentence. Execution is still lacking. A splash page at the top of the site with an embedded Flash file crashes many people. Over at Talkin'Broadway, a member of the chatterati has abtly nicknamed the redesign Theatre.suck. (I think Mark Bakalor already owns that domain...) The search engine works better than any of the other sites reporting on theatre. There are parts of the site that are impressive content-wise such as long running shows, time warp, and other interesting statistic oriented pages. The tough part? It is a lot of work to keep those pages current.

On the design side, frames are so 90s. I don't think I can find a major site in any industry that is using frames. Also, there is too much flash/java/rollover stuff which makes the site load slowly. I'd imagine that the annoying banner at the top of the site that now has a plane skywriting a welcome message will be replaced by a banner ad that will refresh, thereby slowing the load process as well. You would think that since the Broadwayonline.com offices are located in the "Heart of Silicon Alley" (their proclamation, not mine), they could have put together a user interface and useability study. If they did, they need to get their money back.

I am sorry to be so negative about this because they really have such potential. Where else can you find Peter Filichia, Michael Buckley and Robert Viagas... just to name a few of the gems there.

On this day in 1909, Benny Goodman, the American jazz clarinetist and orchestra leader, was born. Following his death on June 13, 1986, his obituary appeared in The Time (go to obit). Other birthdays include Wynonna Judd, Trey Parker (my roommate's future husband), Colm Meaney, and Patrick Dahlheimer.

It is a theatre history day! On ths day in 1593, playwright Christoper Marlowe is killed at Bull's Tavern in Deptford, by Ingram Frizer. It might have been a bar brawl, or murder, but no motive was ever uncovered.

And in 1942, it was the night of the highly disputed kiddnapping of John Barrymore's body. The legend goes that Jack's old poker buddies "The Bundy Drive Boys", including Gene Fowler, W.C. Fields and William Wellman stole Barrymore's corpse from the funeral parlor and sat it up in his usual position at the poker table to scare the hell out of Errol Flynn.

'Follies': Passion Throbs in Sondheim's Bitter Valentine

There will be no articles from theatre.com posted by me until they get rid of that atrocious re-design. I can't read it.

You think it's normally a zoo outside of the St. James? You should have seen it today! The normal huge lines for tickets, of course, but with one very important difference: Today was the first performance Nathan Lane has missed since the show has been in New York. There were some very angry theatregoers, more than a few of whom wanted their tickets refunded. This, of course, worked out well for those in the cancellation line, including me. Rest assured, however, that if Lane is out when you go to see the show, you will have nothing to fear. Understudy Ray Wills gave an excellent performance in Lane's place. Despite a couple of problems (including the glass on Bialystock's office door falling out during an entrance!), the show remained at its usual high level of quality.

And while on the subject of understudies:

There are THREE rules in producing:
    1) Never put your own money in a show.
    2) NEVER PUT YOUR OWN MONEY IN A SHOW!
    3) If you are going to extend, ask the actors first and make sure they don't hear about it by reading Broadway.com, otherwise you may have to cancel the extension you just announced because you have no cast.
This has been a public service announcement by BroadwayStars.com

On another note, saw the incredible Brian d'Arcy James in Conor McPherson's The Good Thief last night. Even though yesterday's article on Playbill Online said that the show closed last night, it still has one performance this afternoon. If you are within 50 miles of 45 Bleecker Street, you should make it your business to see it. The writing is so good and Brian shows us again why he is sought after by every producer. Spoke briefly to Brian after the show and he confirmed to me that he is doing the Chess concert/production at the Helen Hayes in Nyack in August. As for Sweet Smell of Success, Assassins and The Broadway Tenors, lets hope they all don't happen at the same time so we can continue to see him in all different roles.

I am off to Connecticut. See y'all on Tuesday. Please don't burn down the internet while I am gone. :-)
