I Wanna Be a Producer! by Lynda Sturner

Q&A: Michael Berresse by Paul Wontorek
I actually saw A.I. last night. The film as a whole is... uh... interesting. But Michael Berresse did do an excellent job. I'd love to wish him a successful career in the movies, but I want him to keep working in the theatre, too!

Robert Sean Leonard is B'way's Next Music Man
I find this a very exciting choice... I had never seen Leonard onstage before The Invention of Love, but was blown away by his performance. I'll be very interested to see what he does with Harold Hill, but I'm expecting him to be about as different as can be from McCormack and Bierko!

'Blue': A Pop-Tune Counterpoint to a Family's Wisecracks

God Bless Richard Kollmar! by Peter Filichia
Is anyone else as annoyed with Broadway Online as I am right now? Talk about a pain in the neck! I can live with an ad popping up the first time I click on their site, but to have a new window with an ad pop up EVERY time I click on something? That is extremely annoying and a waste of my time. The only reason I posted a link to them right now, is because I think Peter is a good guy and I enjoy reading his column. It's all I have time for during my lunch break, sorry Broadway Online.

ABBA-cadabra: $10 Million-Plus

On June 28, 1902, Richard Rodgers, the American composer who was a major force in 20th Century musical comedy was born. Following his death on December 30, 1979 his obituary appeared in the Times. Today's other birthdays include: Mel Brooks, Kathy Bates, John Elway, John Cusack (my secret crush), Mary Stuart Masterson, Gil Bellows, Danielle Brisebois (Molly from the first Broadway production of ANNIE).

Jack Lemmon, Academy Award Winning Actor, Dies at 76
His first Broadway play, a revival of "Room Service," lasted only two weeks but provided a ticket to Hollywood. Lemmon returned to Broadway in 1985 for a well-received revival of Eugene O'Neil's "Long Day's Journey into Night."

Show World: Above a Hall of Sex, a Corner of Culture
For well over a year, the second floor of the Show World pornography emporium on Eighth Avenue near West 42nd Street has housed productions of Chekhov and other sober playwrights who don't incorporate dancers' poles in their works. Peter Jacobson, an actor, is happy to be appearing in the latest of them, five one-act plays grouped under the title "Worldly Acts."
Still, he said, there is a moment he dreads every night: walking past the tawdry Show World marquee and into the theater.
"I hope to be alone when I walk in here and hope that nobody sees me," he said.
I believe one of our Broadway Stars staff members has done the lighting on a play or two at Show World. She also happens to have a birthday today, Happy Birthday Catherine!"

More Muscular Software Makes VCD's Feel the Burn
It's off topic, but I know we have a few readers and staff people who are computer officianados (geeks seems like such a high school word).

Culture Notes: Thou Swell
A year before the centennial of the birth of the composer Richard Rodgers (1902-1979), plans are under way for a worldwide commemoration. Among the highlights are Broadway productions of "Oklahoma!" and "The Boys From Syracuse," concert versions of "No Strings" at City Center and "Carousel" at Carnegie Hall," a new adaptation in Los Angeles of "Flower Drum Song," Trevor Nunn's Royal National Theater staging of "South Pacific" and Andrew Lloyd Webber's London production of "The Sound of Music."

Broadway Grosses: Cuckoo's Dip
The interesting thing here is the Rocky anomaly. It is in the top 5 in percentage and the bottom 5 in revenue. The key: massive discounting to fill the house. The current 2 for 1 promotion is ending so the average ticket price may rise, so if they can hold on to the percentages while this happens, the show may have a continued life. But I fear that this audience is more price sensitive than a typical Kiss Me Kate type of audience.

Tick, Tick...Boom! To Be Recorded by RCA Victor

Isn't Susan Stroman considering Robert Sean Leonard as the next Harold Hill? Hmmm.... Speaking of Music Man, Luker and co-star McCormack are becoming quite the restauranteurs...

Was out in Chicago this weekend seeing a few shows. First was Bill Finn's "Muscle". One can understand why Sondheim would pull out of this disastrous show. I should have read the Variety review before I bought the tickets...

Now, on the other hand, I saw Jason Robert Brown's "The Last Five Years" at Northlight Theatre in Skokie and I thought it was excellent. LFY takes the audience through a 5 year relationship. It is a two character play. The woman's character (played by Lauren Kennedy) starts at the end of the relationship and works her way backward to the beginning. The man's character (played by Norbert Leo Butz) starts in the beginning and works toward the end. The show is heartbreaking and funny.

I think it can have a nice run off-Broadway. It will be recorded in the fall. I saw Marty Bell in the house after the show. On the heels of "A Class Act" I think this show would be welcome producing project for him. [Thanks for the correction on Marty's credit.]
