[ STARS ]  GEORGE S. IRVING LOOKS BACK ON A HALF CENTURY IN THEATER
by ELLIS NASSOUR

The Tony Award-winning scene-stealer has been reflecting on his 50 plus years in theater as he prepares for his one-man retrospective George S. Irving - Still Carrying On, at the Lucille Lortel Theatre June 18-20. "One thing for sure," he says emphatically, "theater has changed! The biggest change is that the great composers are gone. Every year one or the other had a new show. They were giants! We still have Sondheim, but the economics of today's theatre don't allow a new show every season."

[ DN ]Bard from attending
    Bard from attending
Flushing: I am a wheelchair-using disabled person with a number of medical problems. The last two years, I've been able to enjoy Shakespeare in the Park because it allowed the disabled to reserve tickets in advance and pick them up before the show. The new manager has changed this policy. Now you have to go to the theater at 1 p.m. the day of the show and wait on line. If you are able-bodied, this may not seem like a problem, but for the disabled it can be near impossible. You might have medical conditions that could endanger your health if you sit out in the sun. And those who use Access-A-Ride cannot arrange to be dropped off to wait for tickets, then be picked up and taken to the park for the performance. I believe this new policy will exclude the disabled from being able to attend.

    Peter Shamin
Can someone do something about this? How disgusting.

I have only one comment to pass along on the AVENUE Q/Las Vegas controversy.
I have a friend living in Chicago who has been in love with AVENUE Q ever since he first saw the video clips on their website last year. He has been eagerly anticipating the day when a national tour would bring AVENUE Q to his hometown.
Yesterday, after finding out that the show would be going to Las Vegas instead, he wrote me the following in an email:

"Damn it, I really wanted to see this legitimately. Now I'm not feeling quite as bad about that pirated videotape of the production I picked up. *sigh*"

Somewhere inside "Fabulation (or, the Re-Education of Undine)," Lynn Nottage's slightly dishevelled play at Playwrights Horizons, is the touching and deeply felt story of a black woman who rose to educational and career heights, but who lost touch with herself along the way.
