    This year's Barrymore Awards, honoring the best in Philadelphia area theater in the 2010-2011 season, were presented on Monday night at a ceremony at the Walnut Street Theatre. Here are my pictures of this event, which was dominated by The Wilma Theater's In the Next Room, or the vibrator play (which won 8 Barrymores) and Theatre Horizon's The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (which won 4).

     

     

    smith_nutter.jpgAnna Deavere Smith earned the Outstanding Leading Actress in a Play honor for playing twenty characters in her one-woman show Let Me Down Easy (at Philadelphia Theatre Company). Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter presented her with the award.

     

    hodge_nutter_williams.jpg Dan Hodge was named Outstanding Leading Actor in a Play for his performance in Delaware Theatre Company's Around the World in 80 Days. He was also nominated in the Supporting Actor in a Play category for the Walnut's The 39 Steps. Looking on are Mayor Nutter and the evening's emcee, 6ABC news anchor Rick Williams.

      mcclendon_markowitz.jpgJoel Markowitz of Maryland Theatre Guide with Forrest McClendon, who will be recreating his Tony-nominated role in The Scottsboro Boys for Philadelphia Theatre Company starting in January.

    Broadway's Kate Shindle was one of the presenters.
    She spoke of her beginnings in theater at South Jersey's Bishop Eustace Prep.

    Mary Martello, nominated for Leading Actress in a Musical in the Arden Theatre's The Threepenny Opera (and currently appearing at the Arden again in August: Osage County), presented several awards along with Forrest McClendon. Both are previous Barrymore winners.

    Rachel Camp was named Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical for Theatre Horizon's Spelling Bee.

    The next winner onstage was her Spelling Bee co-star Michael Doherty, who danced excitedly and said,
    "This is so crazy - my girlfriend just won!" He won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Musical.

    The Spelling Bee cast picked up the Barrymore for Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical...

    ... while the cast of The Wilma Theater's In the Next Room, or the vibrator play was chosen Outstanding Ensemble in a Play. Krista Apple (second from right) picked up the Barrymore for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play.

    Rob McClure won his second Barrymore for Outstanding Leading Actor in a Musical as the Professor in the Arden's The Flea and the Professor. He previously won in the same category for The Bomb-itty of Errors in 2007.

    Playwright Terrence McNally was honored with the Barrymore Tribute for a Distinguished Artist in the Theatre. Philadelphia Theatre Company has presented the world premiere of several McNally plays, including Master Class.


    hollinger.jpg Playwright Michael Hollinger, whose beautiful play Ghost-Writer (presented at the Arden)
    earned the Independence Foundation Award for Outstanding New Play.

     

    ijames_sanford.jpgJames Ijames scored two big awards: Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play (for the Arden's Superior Donuts), and the F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist (which comes with a $10,000 cash prize).
    Looking on is last year's Haas winner, Sarah Sanford.

     

    ziska.jpg Blanka Ziska won her fifth Barrymore for directing In the Next Room.
    The show also won for Outstanding Overall Production of a Play.

     

    nolen.jpg The Arden's Terry Nolen picked up the award for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical,
    for The Flea and the Professor.
